Start with the job the money needs to do
A one-off fit-out and an ongoing stock cycle create different funding needs. Before comparing products, work out the amount you need, when it needs to be available and how the business would make repayments. Borrowing costs should fit the expected benefit and your capacity to repay, including quieter trading periods.
A term loan provides an agreed sum with a repayment schedule. A revolving facility allows access up to an approved limit under its terms. Asset and invoice finance work differently again because they relate to particular equipment or receivables.

What lenders assess
Lender requirements vary by product. They may consider trading history, revenue, expenses, existing debts, credit history, the purpose of the loan and any security. A large turnover figure alone does not tell you what the business can afford.
There is no universal minimum revenue, interest rate or approval time that applies to every business. Review a specific proposal and its conditions before making a commitment.
What to prepare
- A clear funding purpose and approximate amount
- Current income, expenses and outstanding debts
- Recent bank statements and business financials
- A cash flow forecast including proposed repayments
Common questions
Are small business loans different from business loans?
Small business loans is a broad description of funding for smaller businesses, rather than one standard product. The structure and lender terms are what determine how it works.
Can a sole trader explore business funding?
Yes. Business structures can include sole traders as well as companies and partnerships. Product availability and assessment depend on the lender and the circumstances.
Does exploring Atlas submit an application?
No. The finder helps you explore a funding category and review a brief. You can then choose to send Atlas an enquiry with your consent. This does not apply for credit or send an application to a lender.
General information only. Product terms and availability vary. Check the actual proposal and obtain advice appropriate to your circumstances.
